Select Fields Index

On the Select Fields page you select the fields that will appear in the table (or tables) in your report. After making your choices, click the Submit button.

You get to the Select Fields page when you click the Next button on the Select Data page.

The Select Fields page displays a set of dropdown lists, each of which is followed by three radio buttons labeled Row, Column, and Page. Each dropdown list contains the values of one field. The set of fields depends on the data you selected on the Select Data page. Below the dropdown lists is a checkbox labeled Create a separate table for each value of the "Page" field.

If this box is unchecked, the Page radio buttons are all disabled (grayed out), and the report you create will consist of a single table. This table will contain a row for each item in the dropdown list next to the Row radio button that's checked. And it will contain a column for each item in the dropdown list next to the Column radio button that's checked. These two dropdown lists will be shaded a silver color to indicate that it doesn't matter which item is selected, since all the items in the list will be used.

If the box is checked, the Page radio buttons are all enabled (no longer grayed out), and the report you create will consist of a separate table for each item in the dropdown list next to the Page radio button that's checked. Like the dropdown lists whose items will be used for the rows and columns, the dropdown list whose items will be used for the page values will be shaded silver.

Understanding how this works is easier with an example. Suppose on the Select Data page you've selected incidence data for the entire state during a 1-year period, with the report to show counts and age-adjusted rates with one digit after the decimal point. With that selection, the Select Fields page will have four dropdown lists, one each for the fields Race, Sex, Year, and Site. Suppose Race is selected for the row values, and Sex for the column values. And also suppose 2005 is selected in the Year dropdown list, and Lung and Bronchus is selected in the Site dropdown list. When you click the Submit button, the following table is created for the report. (Note the numbers in the table can change because the Cancer Registry constantly receives information on cases it didn't have, even cases going back a number of years.)

  Both Sexes Males Females
Counts Rates Counts Rates Counts Rates
All Races 5,159 81.1 2,917 106.3 2,242 63.1
White 4,774 80.9 2,687 105.2 2,087 63.6
Black 365 89.7 218 132.8 147 61.8
Other 18 *33.2 11 *53.7 7 *20.1

As you can see, the rows in the report are the values of the Race field, and the columns are the values of the Sex field. The columns are subdivided into counts and rates. The counts are the number of cases of lung cancer diagnosed in Indiana in 2005 for the given race and sex. For example, there were 2,687 cases of lung cancer diagnosed among white males in Indiana in 2005. The rates are the number of cases for each 100,000 people in the corresponding population. Thus the rate of 105.2 for white males means there were 105.2 cases diagnosed for every 100,000 white males in Indiana in 2005. However, this is an age-adjusted rate, which means it's been adjusted so that it can be reasonably compared with the rate from another geographic area that may have a different age distribution.
