Data Fields Index

The following data fields each have a dropdown list on the Select Fields page. The values in the dropdown lists are the possible values of the field. Some of the fields appear only if you've selected specific options on the Select Data page. For most of the fields the first value in the list is a summary value, that is, it's the sum of all the other values combined. In some instances, the summary value will have more cases than the sum of all the other values. This occurrs if there are cases where the field value is unknown. For example, if the county where a patient resided at the time of diagnosis is not known, but it is known that the patient was an Indiana resident, then that case will be included in the summary value Indiana, but it will not be included in any specific county.

County

The values in the dropdown list are the names of the 92 Indiana counties. The first value in the list is the summary value Indiana. A case is counted as belonging to a particular county if the patient was living in that county at the time of diagnosis.

This field appears only if you've selected County as the Geographic Area on the Select Data page.

Race

The values in the dropdown list include the two major race groups in Indiana, namely White and Black (African-American). Since all other races combined make up less than 2% of the population in Indiana, they are combined into the Other category. The first value in the list is the summary value All Races.

This field does not appear if you've selected County as the Geographic Area on the Select Data page.

Sex

The values in the dropdown list are Male and Female. The first value in the list is the summary value Both Sexes.

Year

The values in the dropdown list depend on the Time Period you've selected on the Select Data page.

If you've selected 1-year periods, the values in the list are individual years, starting with the most recent for which complete data is available, and going back to 1995.

If you've selected 5-year periods, the values in the list are ranges of years. The first range in the list is the 5-year period ending with the most recent year for which complete data is available. The last range in the list is 1995-1999.

If you've selected 10-year periods, the values in the list are ranges of years. The first range in the list is the 10-year period ending with the most recent year for which complete data is available. The last range in the list is 1995-2004.

There is no summary value for the year field.

Site

The values in the dropdown list are the site recodes defined by the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute. The recoded values defined for mortality data differ somewhat from the recoded values defined for incidence. In both cases, there are summary values at multiple levels. For example, for incidence recodes, Sigmoid Colon is included in the summary value Colon excluding Rectum, which in turn is included in the broader summary value Colon and Rectum, which is part of the still broader Digestive System, which then is part of the broadest summary value, namely All sites. The mortality recodes are similar, but Sigmoid Colon does not appear as a distinct value. Instead Colon excluding Rectum is the most specific value.

If you've selected County as the Geographic Area on the Select Data page, the list of sites is limited to the most common ones, that is, the sites with the highest case counts.

Stage

This dropdown list contains the following staging values:

This field appears only if you've selected Stage as the Type of Data on the Select Data page.

Age Cohort

The values in the dropdown list are the standard 5-year age cohorts. The final age cohort is 85+, which includes everyone 85 and older. The first value in the list is the summary value All Ages.

This field appears only if you've selected Age Specific as the Age Adjusting option and you've selected State as the Geographic Area on the Select Data page.
